Funding and Scholarships
Departmental funding is available on a competitive basis to outstanding students in the form of teaching assistantships, Queen Elizabeth Scholarships and Faculty of Graduate Studies Scholarships. Funding for Masters students in thesis-based programs is at a minimum of $18,000.00 per 12-month period for up to 24 months. Funding for PhD students is a minimum of $21,000.00 per 12-month period for up to 48 months. International students also have the opportunity to be considered for Geography Excellence Awards to help offset the cost of differential fees. Geography Excellence awards are available on a competitive basis.
In addition to Departmental funding, there are numerous opportunities for internal University scholarships and research support competitions. We strongly encourage students to apply for scholarship support from a variety of sources, including national agencies such as NSERC, SSHRC, Alberta Innovates, or other scholarships and bursaries listed with the Faculty of Graduate Studies. If a student receives support from a major award or scholarship, their Departmental support is normally reduced so that the Department can fund more students. In these cases, total funding will still be above the guaranteed minimum amount.
Fees
Masters students pay full program fees in the first year and continuing fees for subsequent years. PhD students pay full program fees until completion of their Candidacy Examinations and continuing fees for subsequent years. Currently, International students pay a 100% differential fee on program and continuing fees. All students pay yearly general fees of approximately $1000.00 which includes a Bus/Transit Pass, Graduate Student Association fees, and extended health and dental premiums.
For more detailed information on fees, please check fee link on the Faculty of Graduate Studies website.
