John Yackel

Biography:

John Yackel joined the department in July 2000 as the first MGIS appointment. John completed degrees at Wilfrid Laurier (BA '91) and Calgary (M.Sc. '95) before conducting Ph.D. research at the Centre for Earth Observation Science, University of Manitoba in Winnipeg where he focused on the use of microwave remote sensing for estimating the thermodynamic and ablation state of Arctic sea ice.

Research Interests:

John remains active in sea ice research and is an annual participant of the Collaborative-Interdisciplinary Cryospheric Experiment (C-ICE) in the Canadian High Arctic. He is currently a co-principal investigator on several national and international climate change related projects to use remote sensing for examining Arctic sea ice - climate processes.
