Thesis-based Progams

Departmental funding is available on a competitive basis to outstanding students in the form of teaching assistantships, Geography Excellence Awards, Queen Elizabeth Scholarships and Faculty of Graduate Studies Scholarships:

  • Minimum funding for MA & MSc students is $19,000 per 12-month period for up to 24 months.
  • Minimum funding for PhD students is $21,000 per 12-month period for up to 48 months.
  • Departmental funding is not normally awarded to course-based students (MGIS); however, there are scholarship opportunities available
  • In addition to departmental funding, there are numerous opportunities for university and external scholarships and research support competitions. Thesis-based students are expected to apply for scholarship support from a variety of sources, including national agencies such as NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR, Alberta Innovates, or other scholarships and bursaries listed with the Faculty of Graduate Studies. If a thesis-based student receives a major award or scholarship, their departmental support will be adjusted accordingly

Master's students pay full program fees in the first year and continuing fees for subsequent years. All students – domestic and International – pay annual general fees which include a Transit Pass, Graduate Student Association fees and extended health and dental premiums.

Course-based programs pay tuition per course as well as annual general fees. Please check the Faculty of Graduate Studies site for more details.

There is no department funding for course based programs however there are some scholarship opportunities.
