Biography

Originally born in Germany and exported to Calgary from the beaches of Delaware and Hawai'i, Stephen joined the Department of Geography at the UofC in January 2017 where he is undertaking his Ph.D. under the supervision of Dr. Brent Else. Following a B.S. in Environmental Chemistry from the University of Delaware in 2012, Stephen has slowly made his way north to Canada after spending his first year of graduate school enjoying the island life on Oahu while exploring the seawater pH dynamics and marine CO2 chemistry of the coral reefs and atolls of the Northwest Hawai'ian Islands before transferring back to the University of Delaware to finish an M.S. in Oceanography in December 2016. At the University of Delaware, Stephen's work broadly encompassed estuarine and coastal ocean CO2 chemistry with a focus on pH sensor development.

At the University of Calgary, Stephen will take a step back and view marine CO2 chemistry of the coastal zone in a much larger context in an effort to better understand the impacts of seasonal freshwater inputs on the marine CO2 system of the inland shelf seas of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. In addition to his academic work, Stephen is also an industry-trained Analytical Chemist and he maintains active membership in a number of internationally recognized scientific societies to remain abreast of important developments in the fields of study that hold his interest.
